Natural irradiation is the cause for the unique green hue. The most common radioactive element that naturally occurs in the Earth’s crust involved in transforming a diamond green is Uranium. After extreme, extended exposure, diamonds absorb the alpha particles and deformation in the crystal lattice occurs, resulting in various hues of green.

There is a high level of difficulty involved in discerning between a rare natural irradiated diamond and a lab irradiated diamond. Diamond cutters leave what is known as a “natural” on the edge to prove the authenticity of the green hue.
